Went to see with high hopes. The movie played more like "Chinatown" only instead of Jack Nicholson we got Ed Norton with Tourette's Syndrome. The story is somewhat confusing so you had better pay attention. It was clearly a swipe at Robert Moses who built most of the highways and bridges on Long Island (which was originally part of Brooklyn. Story was about mostly Black people being displaced from their homes through Eminent Domain by idealistic to a fault "Moses" character. In reality, people who were displaced by government projects were offered equal value for their property and most property taken was used, for the housing projects you see today. There is one scene in a Harlem Jazz Club where we must listen to not one or two, but three jazz tunes which has nothing to do with moving the story. However if the slow, moody old style detective genre is your thing you will love this.

I watched this at home on DVD from my public library, my wife chose to skip and read instead.
This was a passion project for Edward Norton, spanning almost 20 years, buying the movie rights to the novel even before it officially hit the bookstores. Norton wrote the script, directed the movie, and stars as detective Lionel Essrog who, because he was an orphan became called Motherless Brooklyn. He suffers from Tourette's but also has a photographic memory, he remembers everything he sees and hears.
In total I was a bit disappointed in the movie. While it is well made and has a superb cast, all the details and connections in the end are a bit fuzzy. It has to do with a powerful man who doesn't let anything get in his way of creating the vision he has for New York City's future, including parks, bridges and developments. Often that involves chasing out the poor to demolish their habitats. And much of it is illegal.
Early in the movie Lionel's mentor and boss is killed and the rest of the movie is his sorting everything out and identifying the guilty parties.
